The 2024 French Open at Roland-Garros has two humongous men’s semifinal matches in store on Friday. After the Alcaraz vs. Sinner match, Norway's Casper Ruud and Germany's Alexander Zverev will clash on the clay court. Both of these powerhouses will have the opportunity at a career-defining win.
The 2024 French Open continues on Friday, June 7, 2024 (6/7/24) with the semifinal round of the competition at Roland Garros in Paris, France.
For the last three years Alexander Zverev has reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros but has never progressed to the final. The German will now have the chance to end this run after demonstrating his undoubted quality with a comfortable straight-set victory over 11th seed Alex De Minaur. The 28-year-old has already claimed a title on clay this year, triumphing in the Italian Open, and has impressed thus far in Paris with wins over Rafa Nadal and Holger Rune.
Standing in Zverev’s way is a familiar foe in Casper Ruud. The pair have played each other on four occasions and each has two wins to their name. However, the Norwegian triumphed in the most high-profile meeting when he secured a thumping three-set win in the French Open semi-finals. The three-time major finalist is back in the last four and is enjoying an excellent 2024, having already won titles on clay in Barcelona and Geneva.

As tennis pro Alexander Zverev competes for a Grand Slam title at the French Open in Paris, he is also involved in a court case at home in Germany connected to his former partner’s accusation he caused her bodily harm.
The fact that Zverev has continued to play one of tennis’ biggest events — he will play Norway’s Casper Ruud in the semifinals on Friday after winning his quarterfinal match against Australia’s Alex de Minaur on Wednesday night — while facing such serious allegations has highlighted the sport’s lack of a clear policy on domestic violence.
Zverev is facing a charge of causing bodily harm to his then-partner during an argument in Berlin in May 2020. The prosecution alleges he pushed her against a wall and choked her, German news agency dpa reported Friday from the trial.
The trial comes after Zverev contested an earlier penalty order issued Oct. 2, including a requirement for Zverev to pay fines amounting to 450,000 euros ($488,000). Penalty orders are used in Germany as a means of resolving some criminal cases without going to trial, if the suspect does not contest the order.
The trial bega n Friday at the court in central Berlin but much of what has taken place so far has been closed to the media and the public.
The district court has planned for 10 days of hearings in total on non-consecutive days through to July 19, according to dpa. That would stretch through the entire span of the French Open and Wimbledon and into the build-up for the Olympic tennis tournament, which Zverev won in 2021.
The ATP Tour and Grand Slam tournaments, like the French Open, do not have a policy that would bar players accused of domestic abuse and there are no restrictions on which events Zverev can play.
Zverev was elected by other players in January to serve a two-year term on the ATP Player Advisory Council, which offers policy recommendations to the ATP’s management and board of directors.
Zverev, who was born in Hamburg to Russian parents, is by far Germany’s highest-ranked player in men’s or women’s tennis and one of the country’s best-known sports competitors.
The trial so far not been front-page news in Germany, where legal proceedings are not televised and there is typically less detailed day-by-day reporting from trials than in some other countries such as the United States. German-language news stories about Zverev’s recent matches in Paris often do not mention the trial.
Zverev has defeated three straight ranked opponents to reach the semifinal round and get a rematch with Ruud, who defeated him in the 2023 French Open semis. After surviving back-to-back five-set battles with No. 26 Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune in the third and fourth rounds, Zverev defeated No. 11 Alex De Minaur in straight sets (6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4) to build momentum coming out of the quarterfinals.
Ruud also has three straight wins over ranked foes to roll into the semis, with his last in the quarterfinals coming by walkover against injured No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Prior to that, Ruud defeated No. 28 Tomas Martin Etcheverry and No. 12 Taylor Fritz, both in four sets, in the third and fourth rounds. Ruud has tournament wins this season at the Gonet Geneva Open (May 18-25) and the Barcelona Open (April 13-21).
Two players that have experienced plenty of Roland Garros heartache go head-to-head in Friday's second French Open Men's semifinal as World number as Alexander Zverev takes on Casper Ruud.
World number seven Ruud was last year's runner-up to Novak Djokovic, having lost the 2022 final to Rafael Nadal, but has benefitted from Djokovic's withdrawal through injury with a bye into the semifinals.
Zverev is appearing in his fourth consecutive French Open semifinal, but has never gone beyond the last four at Roland Garros. Much will depend on the German's recovery levels if he is to finally reach the final for the first time, having had to endure five-set battles against Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune in the third and fourth rounds as well as a taxing encounter with Alex de Minaur in Wednesday's quarterfinal.
While Zverev crushed Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals in straight sets, Ruud was able to rest up because of Novak Djokovic's withdrawal from the tournament due to a knee injury. Last year, Casper Ruud defeated Alexander Zverev in the French Open semifinals in straight sets to advance to his second straight title match at Roland-Garros. He's now just one win away from making it to three consecutive finals in the quest for his first Grand Slam title.
